This handwritten letter by John Brown is just one example of the many historical pieces we have sold. Brown was an anti-slavery advocate who was charged for treason, murder, and conspiracy after his attempt to capture the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry and distribute the weapons to slaves. This letter was written to newspaper editor Mr. Gallagher, and Brown discusses his personal distaste for how he, Brown, was represented in the newspapers. This letter was one of the last to come from Brown’s hand, as this was written while he awaited his execution by hanging.

We also specialize in pieces from soldiers, such as this letter autographed by Richard Montgomery. Montgomery is perhaps most known for leading the unsuccessful 1775 invasion of Quebec where he was killed in action. In this letter, Montgomery assumes his new position as second-ranking brigadier general of the Continental Army. This rare document realized a price of $27,453.

Another star seller going for $122,500 were these fragments of Fort Henry’s star spangled banner. This very banner inspired America’s own national anthem that is still heard in arenas all over the nation to this day. The flag was commissioned by George Armistead after taking over command of Fort Henry, requesting ‘a flag so large that the British would have no difficulty seeing it from a distance.’
